I spent 77 hours traveling from California to DC by train. It was worth it, but there are a few things everyone should know before hitting the rails for a long ride.
Briefly

There's no WiFi on certain Amtrak routes, and when available, it can be unreliable, making it hard to work remotely. I relied on downloaded movies.
Choosing your seat matters! The views differ significantly depending on which side you select. I recommend sitting on the left side for the best scenery.
Train cars can get quite chilly due to air-conditioning, especially at night. I suggest wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a jacket for warmth.
The observation car is a popular spot for breathtaking views, but if it's crowded, there are still great views to enjoy just below it.
