How Daniel Melendez found community among the shelves of a Mission bookstore
""I've been lucky to meet people like Kate," Meléndez said. "Old-school San Francisco people.""
""The bookstore has given me a job, friends, community, a girlfriend one time, too," Meléndez said, adding that he even met someone at the bookstore who became a member of his band."
""Bajar es lo peor" by the Argentine writer Mariana Enriquez."
Daniel Meléndez organizes shelves, talks with customers, and orders books for Dog Eared Books' Spanish literature section. The shop carries must-read novels, including untranslated titles such as "Bajar es lo peor" by Mariana Enriquez. Meléndez curates the store's music, favoring reggae and international groups. He first visited Dog Eared in 2013 and later moved from Mexico City to San Francisco in January 2021. Chance encounters led him to work at Alley Cat Books and then Dog Eared after an ownership change in fall 2022. The bookstore provided him with employment, friends, community, and personal connections, including a bandmate and others who married.
