A Huey helicopter flew over San Jose to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, marking Black April, when the Vietnam War ended. The event was attended by veterans and local community leaders, including Philip Nguyen from the Vietnamese American Roundtable, who emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the sacrifices made by those affected by the war. The ceremony aimed to connect younger Vietnamese Americans with their heritage and foster appreciation for the resilience of refugee communities.
To be able to see the Huey helicopter and to look out and see folks that are my parents age, my grandparents age, paying homage and their respect to America's efforts to bring them in, welcome them as refugees when they first arrived.
It's an homage to the history that we share with our parents, and also to our parents and the folks that came before us, that came to America and really built their homes, their new families.
