The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department received a large volume of 4,200 name submissions for the Great Highway, narrowing them down to five top contenders: Playland Parkway, Sunset Dunes, Great Parkway, Fog Line, and Plover Parkway. Names referencing existing parks were excluded, including popular suggestions like Ocean Beach Park and Snowy Plover Park. The department will present these options to the Recreation and Park Commission next Wednesday, with a new park set to open on April 12, following community interest, particularly around the involvement of District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio.
The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department's initial call for name submissions garnered 4,200 proposals, but only five made it to the final shortlist for the Great Highway.
"Part of our methodology was to remove names that refer to existing parks and places," said Tamara Aparton, ensuring the final options reflect uniqueness and distinctiveness.
Next Wednesday, the department will present the names to the Recreation and Park Commission, which will ultimately choose the new name for the park.
Ocean Beach Park and Snowy Plover Park were among the most submitted names, reflecting community enthusiasm, but they were excluded based on departmental guidelines.
