"SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- 'Claude', the iconic albino alligator and mascot of the California Academy of Sciences, will officially have a street named after him in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. On Tuesday afternoon, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the proposal by Supervisor Myrna Melgar. Melgar had put up a poll online for the people to decide which city street will be deemed "Claude the Alligator Way." The beloved reptile died of liver cancer Dec. 2, 2025 at the age of 30."
San Francisco will name a Golden Gate Park street 'Claude the Alligator Way' after Claude, the California Academy of Sciences' albino alligator, following Board of Supervisors approval. Supervisor Myrna Melgar held an online poll allowing residents to choose the street name. Claude died of liver cancer on Dec. 2, 2025, at age 30. The museum will hold a free outdoor community celebration of life on Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain or shine), with additional ticketed events inside the museum. Officials expect a capacity crowd and limited parking; attendees are urged to use public transit.
