Gilroy's mayor and city councilmembers could see their salaries increase by over 50%, raising questions about the best use of city funds amid public safety concerns.
"I feel like we should be compensated for it… each one of us works really hard… I often put in over 20 hours a week on the job," said Councilmember Carol Marques.
"Historically, we haven't had a diverse Council… I think having adequate pay encourages working people… It affords them an opportunity to be up here," stated Councilmember Rebeca Armendariz.
"What you guys do is hard work and it's volunteerism and it should stay that way… if we did want to have diversity, let's use a sliding scale," argued resident Terence Fugazzi.
