Ghirardelli Square Clock Tower Restored, After a Year Behind Covers and Scaffolding
Briefly

The historic clock tower at Ghirardelli Square has been unveiled after a year of repairs due to water damage. Originally built over a century ago, the restoration involved using identical slate tiles from the original construction to maintain its historical integrity. Modern enhancements like LED lighting and lead-free paint were also incorporated while respecting the building's legacy. Ghirardelli Square continues to be a popular landmark, blending its rich history with thoughtful updates.
Given the building's age, restorers used the exact same type of slate tiles from the original construction over a century ago, believing that this slate has been part of the secret to the tower's longevity.
For historic preservation reasons, when putting the new tiles in place we used the exact same layout and design... at Ghirardelli Square is a place where you want to honor the past.
The clock tower has had its covering and scaffolding removed, and can again be enjoyed in its full glory, signifying a successful restoration after nearly a year.
