An estimated two thousand Bay Area residents gathered in Golden Gate Park on Jan. 18, 2026, for a memorial honoring Claude, the California Academy of Sciences' iconic albino alligator. Claude died at 30 last month after a diagnosis of liver cancer. The memorial included musical performance by MJ's Brass Boppers, heartfelt notices from the Academy thanking the public for messages and gifts, and a festive Claude costume contest featuring children in Claude hoodies and elaborate adult costumes. Attendees and participants emphasized Claude's role teaching curiosity, respect for living things, and the shared responsibility to care for the environment.
