San José has completed its first accessory dwelling unit (ADU) condominium that can be sold separately from the main house. This marks a significant milestone as it is expected to be the first of its kind in California. ADUs have gained popularity due to being designed for affordability. San José has permitted 1,500 ADUs since 2022, with total construction permits doubling in the past five years. Despite the increase in ADUs contributing to housing growth, experts remain uncertain about their impact on the overall housing shortage in California, as they accounted for one-fifth of the state's housing growth in 2024.
ADUs are affordable by design and growing in popularity across the state, and now they can offer the most accessible form of home ownership, too.
We are honored to lead the state in this effort and, most importantly, serve our community with more housing opportunities.
Though any housing growth helps address the state's housing crisis, experts are unsure whether ADU construction is making a dent in California's housing shortage.
ADUs accounted for around one-fifth of statewide housing growth in 2024.
