"We've had people stealing water and power, there's been feces and urination, drug use on our property, climbing into our dumpsters and making a huge mess for us to clean up," Winston told SFGATE. "We're very fortunate that we haven't had anything violent happen to any employees or our guests, but it definitely is a concern."
Other Berkeley businesses do claim to have experienced violence. In the lawsuit, Fieldwork Brewing owner Barry Braden recounted an incident where a woman came into the brewery asking for free food, then returned with a 10-foot metal pole, "swinging it at customers and employees." He now requires employees closing at night to walk to their cars in pairs, per the lawsuit.
"I've had people tell me they don't want to come over here," Winston said, referring to her customers.
