Bay Area to get a glimpse of 2025's best supermoon
"The full moon is likely to look abnormally big and bright from down here on Earth on Tuesday night. It's a so-called supermoon, since the moon is both full and at the closest point to Earth in its monthly elliptical orbit. This particular supermoon is predicted to come within just under 222,000 miles of our planet on Wednesday- the nearest supermoon of the year."
"The reason for the night sky spectacle is the moon's 27-day trek around Earth, which is not a perfect circle. The moon reaches the closest point in its orbit, or "perigee," at around 226,000 miles away. When that happens, the full moon can look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, according to NASA."
A supermoon will appear unusually large and bright Tuesday night and again Wednesday night as the moon reaches near its closest orbital point to Earth. The moon is predicted to come within just under 222,000 miles on Wednesday, the nearest supermoon of the year, with peak brightness at 5:19 a.m. Wednesday. The event is the second of three consecutive supermoons and is expected to produce higher-than-normal "king" tides along the San Francisco Bay Area, prompting a coastal flood advisory from Sonoma County to Monterey County. An atmospheric river and storm may hinder viewing Tuesday night into Wednesday.
