Jim Vargas was a Bay Area television journalist who died at 78 in Marin County. He graduated from Archbishop Riordan High in 1965, attended City College of San Francisco and transferred to UC Berkeley, where he became managing editor of the Daily Californian. He began his career at KJEO in Fresno before returning to San Francisco to join ABC7's politics and public affairs team. He covered the assassinations of George Moscone and Harvey Milk, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Vargas worked at KRON in the 1990s and retired from KTVU in 2011. He is survived by a sister, a sister-in-law and 11 nieces and nephews; a funeral mass will be held Feb. 6 at St. Brendan's Church in San Francisco.
