Katie Hanner, a real estate agent, encountered a potential scam involving a supposed land sale. Initial inquiries seemed legitimate, but inconsistencies raised her suspicions, especially when the seller avoided direct contact. Upon investigating, she found the actual landowner knew nothing of the sale. This type of scam, known as 'title piracy,' exploits digital real estate transactions, where scammers forge documents and create fake deeds to sell properties illegally, targeting those looking to purchase land without seeing it first. Hanner's experience emphasizes the increasing sophistication of such scams.
With this particular situation, there were actually a few of his responses that just were not consistent with what a legitimate seller would be inquiring about or requesting.
Eventually, when we determined that this was not a legitimate property owner that we were communicating with, they just ghosted us.
