Tech company moves into San Francisco office ditched by Elon Musk's X
"The startup Motive, which makes software for managing vehicle fleets and recently closed a $150 million funding round, has taken a 40,000-square-foot sublease in the building, X's broker Mike Sample told SFGATE on Thursday. He confirmed that more than 700,000 square feet of space in X's old offices are still up for grabs. X and Motive's deal was first reported by the San Francisco Business Times, whose sources said that the startup would move in in phases, beginning with 25,000 square feet."
"Motive joins a trend in which on-the-climb startups take over Bay Area offices that have been ditched by incumbents of the industry. OpenAI gobbled up massive offices from Uber in 2023, and Scale AI took a chunk from Airbnb last year; this year, Strava and Moloco have each snagged old Meta office space. X pulled employees out of this office last year, shifting them south to outposts in San Jose and Palo Alto, as Wired reported."
Motive, a fleet-management software startup that recently closed a $150 million funding round, signed a 40,000-square-foot sublease at 1355 Market St., the former X/Twitter office in San Francisco's Mid-Market. More than 700,000 square feet of space in the building remains available. The move will begin in phases, starting with 25,000 square feet. The space has attracted interest from small startups and large AI companies. The transaction follows a regional pattern of emerging startups occupying large offices vacated by established tech firms. X shifted employees to San Jose and Palo Alto and vacated the Market Street site last year.
