"By concentrating residential density in larger floorplates at the base and tapering to smaller floorplates above, the tower's massing diminishes as it rises- preserving key view corridors and shaping a unique geometric expression,"
"This strategy introduces much needed density in a porous expression that is responsive to its wider urban context."
"Safeway has been serving San Francisco for more than 80 years, and these projects reaffirm our long-term commitment to the communities,"
Align Real Estate proposes a 25-story, U-shaped mixed-use building at 15 Marina Blvd that would replace the existing 66-year-old Safeway. The project would deliver 790 rental units, including 86 affordable homes, and a 63,000-square-foot grocery store that is 57% larger than the current Safeway. Arquitectonica describes a design that concentrates larger floorplates at the base and tapers above to preserve view corridors and fit the urban context. Construction would likely close the neighborhood grocery for several years while employees are temporarily reassigned and additional jobs are expected when the new store opens. Align is also pursuing redevelopments at Bernal Heights, the Richmond, and the Fillmore.
