Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced the revocation of the city's status, which allowed for potential access to millions in housing assistance, due to the council's failure to expedite affordable housing projects. The council missed a significant deadline connected to a vote against converting a hotel into affordable housing. Mayor Dyer emphasized the necessity for the council to take proactive measures to regain this status, especially as federal housing funding faces cuts amidst broader challenges in the affordable housing landscape affecting localities like Fresno.
"In fact, we're the only city awarded the designation that missed the deadline. I'm ashamed of that as the mayor of this city," said Dyer.
"If we want this designation, we're going to have to do some things from the dais, the council will, that they may not be all that comfortable with," Dyer mentioned.
Dyer highlighted the urgency, stating, "The revocation of the status comes as federal housing funds are being pulled back or challenged."
