After years of advocacy, Los Angeles Metro secured an $893-million federal grant for a 6.7-mile light rail line in the San Fernando Valley, addressing long-standing transportation needs in overlooked communities.
As Veronica Vanterpool stated, 'This is a region that has been overlooked. This will be the first rail line in the heart of a region that has called for high-quality transit for a long time.'
The rail project, which is set to finish by 2031, marks a significant return of rail service to the Valley, ending a 70-year absence since the last Pacific Electric rail car.
Senator Alex Padilla—whose own family relied on public transport in Pacoima—highlighted the project's importance by stating, 'This, for me, it's personal.'
