Officials in all four counties plan to release their first updates shortly after 8 p.m. on Election Day, including mailed-in ballots received before that day.
Elections staff have been imploring residents to vote early to avoid a flood of ballots on Election Day, as mailed ballots arriving on Election Day will be counted later.
In San Mateo County, staff expect to wrap up initial result reporting by 11 p.m. or midnight, while others may take until 2 a.m. or later for updates.
As of Wednesday afternoon, about 25% of registered voters in Santa Clara County and 31% in Contra Costa County had cast their ballots well ahead of Election Day.
