Voters will see Contra Costa County's urban limit line on next year's primary ballots
Briefly

Contra Costa County has safeguarded its open spaces by maintaining an urban limit line for over thirty years. Elected officials are contemplating extending this boundary to 2050 in light of state-mandated housing targets, offering voters a chance to vote on it in June 2026. The urban limit line was established to restrict urban development to 35% of the county, safeguarding agriculture and parks. County planners assert that there is substantial capacity for housing and commercial development within the current limits, supporting sustainable growth while preserving the environment.
As the county stares down ambitious, state-mandated housing goals, there's a chance the historically 20-year plan could be extended through at least 2050.
So much of our natural environment and the things that make Contra Costa County special have remained undeveloped. We want to make sure that continues into the future.
