Recent reports indicate that President Trump may issue an executive order to dissolve USPS’s independent management, potentially moving it under the Department of Commerce. This shift is concerning as it could cancel existing union contracts, risking the welfare of postal workers. The effort seemingly aims at fulfilling Wall Street's long-standing dream of privatizing the Postal Service. The two largest postal unions, the Letter Carriers and APWU, have already rallied to oppose this move, deeming it unlawful and a serious threat to workers’ rights.
When I say that, I see the wheels start turning. A postal worker has a union that negotiates with the Postal Service that betters their life; a federal worker is pretty much dictated to.
This move would be a significant step toward the long-desired privatization of the Postal Service, an aspiration held by Wall Street for many years.
Trump confirmed the next day that he was 'looking at' this option, which raised alarms about the future of USPS and its union contracts.
APWU President Mark Dimondstein called the attack on USPS's independent leadership 'outrageous' and 'unlawful,' highlighting union solidarity against potential privatization.
