The latest round of Homekey funding will provide vital resources to four Bay Area cities aimed at alleviating homelessness through planned housing projects that focus on conversions and construction.
Gov. Gavin Newsom reiterated the commitment to local governments, stating, "We are proud to stand with local partners... to alleviate homelessness... to ensure everyone has a place to call home."
The Homekey program, initiated in 2020, has already helped fund 259 projects, creating thousands of permanent supportive units, emphasizing California's ongoing struggle with homelessness despite significant investment.
While the funding is substantial, the Bay Area continues to grapple with significant homelessness challenges, as evidenced by the rising homeless population totaling approximately 37,000.
