Thai opposition faces trial over royal defamation law
"Thailand's lese-majeste law, known as Section 112, criminalizes criticism of the monarchy and carries severe penalties, including prison terms of up to 15 years per offence."
"Critics argue that the lese-majeste law has been weaponized to silence political opponents, particularly after the liberal opposition was blocked from forming a government despite winning the 2023 election."
"The Move Forward Party was dissolved in 2024 due to its campaign to amend the law, which critics claim undermines Thailand's system of governance where the king is the head of state."
The Supreme Court of Thailand has accepted a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations linked to a 2021 attempt to amend the lese-majeste law. The trial is set to begin on June 30, and those involved include members of the People's Party and the Move Forward Party. If convicted, they could face lifetime bans from office. The court will not suspend the ten serving lawmakers named in the case, including key leaders of the People's Party.
