Supes panel refuses to protect existing housing from demolitions - 48 hills
"We can't agree to demolish San Francisco based on a state mandate from a single legislator based on an unproven ideology."
"Some of my amendments are "non-negotiable ... We will not demolish people's homes to replace them with market-rate units. We will protect our coastal zone, and demand real family housing.""
"There is a fear and anxiety over real estate speculation."
""builder's remedy""
A Board committee voted to table amendments that would have protected all rent-controlled housing from demolition, moving the mayor's Rich Family Zoning Plan closer to full board approval. Supporters argued state mandates could be worse if the plan fails, while Supervisor Connie Chan rejected demolishing homes under a state mandate and called some amendments non-negotiable to protect coastal zones and demand family housing. Supervisor Bilal Mahmood warned that constraints on housing capacity could trigger state enforcement, a "builder's remedy," loss of local land-use control, and potential cuts to roughly $100 million in affordable housing grants.
