Some state workers got a telework reprieve. Will others secure similar wins?
Briefly

In a surprising development, California Governor Gavin Newsom has granted a one-year extension for state workers in the Professional Engineers in California Government to continue teleworking, deferring a previously mandated return to office. This decision comes after legal challenges aimed at the state's telework policy led to a complaint from the state employment board regarding insufficient meetings with labor unions. Other unions are also pursuing similar actions to protect their workers' telework arrangements as negotiating the state's policy shifts appears to be gaining momentum.
Those challenges were premised on a need to collectively bargain telework and return-to-office orders. We need to give collective bargaining a chance.
The lawsuit and unfair labor practice filed by the engineers had a 'big impact' on the return-to-office delay, PECG's executive director, Ted Toppin, said in an interview.
