SF Supervisors Press Geo Group, Halfway House Operator, About July Death of Resident | KQED
"I advocated, and my sister advocated that it would be in his best interest not to be in San Francisco,"
"He was to be safe when he was there,"
"But it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not."
"extremely responsive"
Supervisor Bilal Mahmood pressed Geo Group and a Geo-operated halfway house about a resident's July death during a contentious three-hour City Hall hearing. Geo Group and the facility repeatedly declined to discuss the circumstances of the death. The resident, Bulauan, struggled for decades with substance use and lived with bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia. His son said family members urged officials not to release him to the Tenderloin facility. Bulauan's mother said he was supposed to be safe there and wept that he was not. Facility leadership said the center had been "extremely responsive" to rodent and cockroach issues. Activists have begun efforts to remove Geo Group from 111 Taylor St. and to convert the historic Compton's Cafeteria site into a community center.
