S.F. police and sheriff's deputies rout July 4 crowds in Mission District
Briefly

Celebrations in San Francisco's Mission District featured music, dancing, and fireworks, prompting police to issue dispersal orders around 11 p.m. Lt. Manilla Padilla warned revelers they had four minutes to leave. Despite the police commands, the crowd initially resisted, with some launching additional fireworks. Tensions rose as officers used less-lethal force and detained at least one individual. A woman trying to find lost children was prevented from doing so, illustrating the chaos of the event.
At 10:49 p.m., Lt. Manilla Padilla instructed revelers in the Mission District to disperse, saying, "You have four minutes to leave the area to disperse." The police presence included dozens of officers and sheriff's deputies, equipped and prepared to enforce the dispersal.
The crowd initially stood their ground against the officers as they sprinted towards them, with a large firework exploding in front of them, causing temporary confusion. Defiance was expressed through shouts and additional fireworks.
As tension escalated, officers resorted to targeting the crowd with less-lethal rifles following provocations. One woman approached officers to report lost children but was repeatedly cautioned, "It’s not gonna happen," as she was restrained from searching.
