On his first full day in office, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie implemented a citywide hiring freeze to address a projected $876 million budget deficit.
Lurie emphasized the need to control spending while ensuring that first responders, such as EMTs, nurses, firefighters, and police officers, remain exempt from the freeze.
With the Police Department currently under-staffed by about 200 officers, Lurie noted that the city relies too heavily on mandatory overtime for public safety.
The mayor's statement marks the beginning of his commitment to making 'tough decisions' to reduce costs and fulfill campaign promises to clean up the city.
