Second police shooting in Oakland in 24 hours
Briefly

On February 24, Oakland police engaged in a shootout with an armed individual after residents reported the suspect pointing a firearm. Although the suspect suffered minor injuries—details on whether he was shot remain unclear—no officers were injured. This shooting came shortly after another gunfight involving Oakland Housing Authority police. Investigations are underway by both the Oakland Police Department and the civilian oversight agency. These incidents highlight the escalating violence, particularly following the recent death of an OPD officer in December.
Just after midnight on Feb. 24, Oakland Housing Authority police got into a gunfight with a person they pulled over on 85th Avenue near Tassafaronga Village. According to the police, an officer and the suspect were wounded and hospitalized in stable condition.
The police shooting was the second in Oakland in less than 24 hours.
The last time an OPD officer shot someone was on Jan. 4, when a sergeant saw someone firing a rifle near 66th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard.
The last time an OPD officer was killed in the line of duty was Dec. 29, 2023. Officer Tuan Le was working in a burglary suppression operation when several people suspected of breaking into a cannabis business allegedly fired shots into an OPD vehicle.
