Santa Clara officials unveiled its clean zone map for Super Bowl, World Cup. The City Council worries about the unintended consequences
"The special event zone, which is required by the NFL as part of Santa Clara's hosting agreement, mirrors the map set up by the the city when it last hosted the Super Bowl in 2016. Also known as a clean zone, boundaries aim to ensure first responders can easily access the area, manage traffic congestion and keep sidewalks clear of unpermitted signage and street vendors."
"While we regularly hold concerts and sporting events at the stadium, Super Bowl and FIFA are events on a completely different playing field, Assistant City Manager Elizabeth Klotz told the council. This ordinance will help the city respond to the increasing scale and complexity of major events by establishing consistent and predictable public safety standards across all of event organizers and activities."
Santa Clara unveiled a preliminary map creating a public safety perimeter around Levi's Stadium that restricts activities before and during Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup. The map is a work in progress after the City Council found it too broad and requested a narrower zone. The special event zone, required by the NFL, mirrors the 2016 Super Bowl map and aims to ensure first responder access, manage traffic and keep sidewalks clear of unpermitted signage and vendors. The zone would affect much of the north side and be in effect Feb. 1–10 for the Super Bowl and June 12–July 1 for the World Cup. A majority of the council felt the zone extended beyond the stadium's immediate area; when active, food and merchandise trucks and temporary structures would be prohibited without city approval.
