Santa Clara County is applying for $40.5 million in Project Homekey+ funding to facilitate the construction of the Algarve Apartments, which will provide 91 homes for homeless and low-income residents. This initiative is part of a broader state effort, supported by Proposition 1 passed last March, to address the ongoing housing crisis. Kathryn Kaminski highlighted the significance of Homekey+ funding in enabling the project, which could begin construction with funding that addresses existing funding gaps. Construction completion is anticipated by October 2027.
"Algarve Apartments will... (provide) much needed affordable housing for unhoused and extremely low-income residents," Kaminski told San José Spotlight.
"Participation in the Homekey+ program would enhance the funding for the Algarve Apartments project to the point where it could begin construction."
Gov. Gavin Newsom in September launched Project Homekey+, which sets aside $2.2 billion to house homeless veterans and people with behavioral health or substance use issues.
"Homekey+ funding is crucial to bridge the gap between the existing county and Housing Authority funding commitments and what is needed to begin construction."
