"I swear I can remember standing right there on 8th and Clement thinking, 'This is where I'm going to live when I grow up,'"
"There's so much going on culturally - in terms of food and the farmers market, I'm excited about the change. I just hope that we can think about preserving what makes this neighborhood so special."
"We're part of the city, but we're also a neighborhood. It's not like being in the Financial District. If they tear down stuff to build something higher - I just totally disagree with that."
City officials face a January deadline to approve a plan that would allow taller development in parts of San Francisco. Residents in Fillmore, Inner Sunset, Outer Sunset and the Richmond express mixed reactions. Todd Wanerman moved to Clement Street in 2021 and welcomes added housing but wants the neighborhood's cultural life, food scene and farmers market preserved. Leslie Williams, a 40-year Fillmore resident, lives in a rent-controlled unit and values the low-slung street, trees and night sky; she fears demolition of existing buildings for taller construction and opposes tearing down to build higher. Community character and preservation are central concerns.
