San Francisco has seen a 60% decrease in tent encampments since July, according to data released Thursday. This follows an aggressive crackdown that connected 950 people to shelter.
The city ramped up efforts to clear encampments in the wake of a June Supreme Court decision that opened the door for more aggressive enforcement, including the use of fines and arrests.
Mary Ellen Carroll emphasized that improved coordination among city departments contributed to the success, stating, "Why we have seen improvement is because of the collaborative work of all the city departments."
Supervisor Rafael Mandelman highlighted the significant reductions in tent encampments, remarking, "If you look at the progress the city has made over the last six years, it is remarkable. This is not to say the work is done."
