"If navigating San Francisco government is a bit like running a zoo, it would help to have experience working with animals."
"As I've spent time listening to families, small business owners, and seniors in the Sunset, I've heard the same thing: They want a City Hall that does things with them, not to them - and I couldn't agree more,"
"The Sunset deserves accountable leadership, someone who knows what this neighborhood is all about and someone who is of the Sunset and works for the Sunset,"
"She will bring a fresh perspective to City Hall, and I am honored to appoint her as the next supervisor for District 4."
Isabella "Beya" Alcaraz, 29, is an art and music teacher, former pet shop owner, and lifelong Sunset resident of Filipina-Chinese heritage. Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed her to fill the District 4 seat vacated after Joel Engardio's Oct. 18 recall and will swear her in Thursday. She introduced herself to Lurie at the September Sunset night market before recall votes. She has no prior campaign experience, has never walked a precinct, never worked for the city, and is not a member of any city Democratic club. The mayor cited her small-business experience, noting she paid $1,000 and waited six months for city approval to install a shed at her pet store. A mailed Oct. 20 poll used the pseudonym "Sarah Reyes" for a respondent matching her background. She will face a consequential vote almost immediately.
