David Calkins Jr. made history by winning his third consecutive North Coast Section title in wrestling, overcoming Clayton Valley's Brady Coddington. Calkins emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and is now focused on winning a state championship following last year's quarterfinal exit. Liberty finished a close second in team standings, boasting a total of 181.5 points, with Calkins' teammate Christopher Anderson also winning a title. Meanwhile, Castro Valley's Connor Jeong claimed his second NCS title, emphasizing the need for continued excellence as competition fully intensifies.
Calkins has already made school history, becoming Liberty's first three-time NCS champion. Coach Encarnacion noted, "he brings that competitive nature to us."
After winning his third consecutive NCS title, Calkins said, "I'm just always trying to get better. I know what my main goal is and this feels great, but it's back to work."
Teammate Christopher Anderson won the 122-pound title with an 11-4 victory, showcasing Liberty's strong performance, alongside Calkins' historic achievement.
Connor Jeong secured his second NCS title, moving up in weight classes. He expressed determination, stating, "But it means I have to do really good next week."
