Melissa Hortman, a significant figure in Minnesota politics and former House speaker, was tragically assassinated at her home, an event termed as politically motivated violence by Gov. Tim Walz. Elected in 2004, Hortman played a crucial role in advancing progressive policies in Minnesota, particularly during her leadership when the DFL Party gained full control of the government in 2022. Alongside her husband, she was killed by an assailant posing as a police officer, with another state senator and his wife injured in the same attack. A manhunt for the suspect is ongoing.
"Our state lost a great leader and I lost the greatest of friends," Walz said. "Speaker Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humour and a sense of service."
"It was an act of targeted political violence... an apparent politically motivated assassination," Walz stated at the news conference following the tragic event.
