Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the immediate removal of LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley, citing public safety and operational failures during fire outbreaks. Bass highlighted that under Crowley's leadership, 1,000 firefighters were sent home instead of being deployed. Additionally, she pointed out Crowley's refusal to comply with an investigation directive from the Fire Commission regarding an after-action report on the fires. To ensure continuity in leadership, former Chief Deputy Ronnie Villanueva has been appointed as the interim fire chief. A press conference by Bass is expected for further discussion on this decision.
Acting in the best interests of Los Angeles' public safety, and for the operations of the Los Angeles Fire Department, I have removed Kristin Crowley as Fire Chief.
We know that 1,000 firefighters that could have been on duty on the morning the fires broke out were instead sent home on Chief Crowley's watch.
