Last week, the Social Democrats replaced Sinéad Gibney with Senator Patricia Stephenson as their foreign affairs spokesperson. This change raised eyebrows, with Labour TD George Lawlor highlighting the swift timing of the decision considering Gibney's strong performance. He pointed out inconsistencies in the party's recent choices, particularly involving Eoin Hayes, a suspended TD. Many within the party, including Rory Hearne, have defended Gibney, recognizing her significant contributions and expressing astonishment at her removal amid ongoing debates about the party's direction.
"I would be very impressed by Sinéad Gibney's performance to date," said George Lawlor, questioning the timing and reason behind her replacement.
"The notion that she would be removed so early into her spokespersonship, to me, is a bit hard to fathom," expressed Lawlor regarding the Social Democrats' decision.
"There certainly are a number of questions to answer in relation to it," stated Lawlor, suggesting a lack of clarity in the party's decisions.
Rory Hearne praised Gibney as "exemplary" in her work, reflecting internal support for her contribution in the Dáil.
