Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, resulting in significant defense and energy agreements aimed at reinforcing India's influence in Sri Lanka. The five-year defense cooperation agreement includes training for the Sri Lankan military in India and information exchange. Modi and Dissanayake emphasized mutual security interests, notably through the Colombo Security Conclave. Additionally, they announced the inauguration of a 120-megawatt solar power plant, revived with Indian support, addressing energy needs while balancing Sri Lanka's relations with China, its main creditor.
I am grateful to President Dissanayake for his sensitivity towards India's interests. We believe that we have shared security interests. The security of both countries is interconnected and co-dependent.
I have reiterated our position to Prime Minister Modi that Sri Lankan territory will not be allowed to be used by anyone to undermine India's security.
