Full board will hear Lurie's attempt to fire pro-reform police commissioner - 48 hills
Briefly

Max Carter Oberstone, a lawyer and Police Commission member, is set to challenge Mayor Lurie’s attempt to dismiss him during a Committee of the Whole meeting on February 25. Under the City Charter, the mayor requires majority consent from the Board of Supervisors to remove an appointed police commissioner. Board President Rafael Mandelman indicated that a number of supervisors requested a full board hearing, where both Oberstone and a representative from the Mayor’s Office will likely present arguments. Community advocates are expected to support Oberstone, while Lurie needs the vote from the supervisors to succeed in his request.
Given the prominent role Carter Oberstone has played in police reform and accountability, and his willingness to stand up to the previous mayor, it's likely a good number of community advocates will be on hand.
Mandelman said he expects Carter Oberstone will be present to oppose the move, and that he hopes a representative of the Mayor's Office will also be present.
Under the City Charter, the mayor can't remove an appointed police commissioner without the consent of a majority of the supes.
