"We are currently facing one of the hardest times financially in the hotel industry," James Tyler, the lead engineer at the Palace Hotel, told the committee. "Right now, it is so expensive to maintain the neon. The only option is to find a temporary solution ... or leave the signs dark until it's financially feasible to correct."
The Palace has left the lights "generally non-functional" for approximately five years. Restoring the neon lighting and its maintenance for five years would cost over $500,000, while transitioning to LED lighting would only cost half the amount.
