With Donald Trump back in power, attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have intensified across the nation. At the University of Texas, faculty members face hostility from government officials, particularly Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who targets DEI initiatives and academic freedom. In response to these threats, particularly against critical race theory, UT's Faculty Council affirmed their teaching rights. Faculty of color are now mobilizing to organize, prepare for legislative defenses, and cultivate supportive relationships. These actions aim to counter the socio-political challenges posed by state leadership aimed against DEI principles.
As we rally against attacks on DEI, we must organize, prepare legislative defenses, and build relationships to sustain our values in a hostile environment.
Courageous leadership in the face of politicized hostility requires that educators unite, pushing back against narratives that undermine our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
