The DC-area law schools are witnessing a noteworthy increase in applications, with Howard University School of Law reporting a 38.4% rise. Economic factors, such as recession fears and job market instability, especially affecting recent graduates, have spurred interest in law school. Schools like Georgetown Law and Catholic University are experiencing application surges of 25% and nearly 50%, respectively. Experts note that such trends historically correlate with economic downturns. Previous election cycles have also influenced application rates, reflecting the cyclical nature of interest in legal education during uncertain times.
"Often when people are concerned about the economic outlook for jobs, they're interested in going to school and improving their credentials," says Stephen Payne, dean of the Columbus School of Law.
"It was almost like a replay of what happened in 2020, with the fall entering class of '21," says Andrew Cornblatt, dean of admissions at Georgetown Law.
