Mayor Daniel Lurie of San Francisco has quickly garnered significant power to address the city's fentanyl crisis and homelessness through a newly approved emergency ordinance. The SF Board of Supervisors passed the ordinance with a 10-1 vote, allowing for the establishment of a pop-up police station in the controversial SoMa Nordstrom parking lot. This ordinance aims to eliminate street drug markets and enhance shelter capacity while enabling private donations to facilitate Lurie's initiatives, showcasing a proactive approach to urgent urban issues.
The Fentanyl State of Emergency Ordinance gives us the tools to treat this crisis with the urgency it demands.
As mayor, I am proud to be delivering on that promise today, Lurie said after the vote.
Lurie's measure eliminates competitive bidding ... and allows private donations of up to $10 million per donor to fund Lurie's efforts.
Notably, it creates a 24-hour drop-off center at the infamous Nordstrom parking lot ... an unprecedented facility.
