The Portrait of a Phenomenal Woman monument, unveiled by Mayor London Breed, celebrates Dr. Maya Angelou, marking it as the first piece in San Francisco's Civic Art Collection honoring a Black woman.
Created by artist Lava Thomas, the monument draws inspiration from a 1973 interview of Dr. Angelou, emphasizing her legacy and the importance of connection through shared experiences.
In addition to the monument, the San Francisco Public Library launched a special edition library card adorned with Dr. Angelou’s portrait, further commemorating her influence and contributions.
Dr. Maya Angelou's connection to San Francisco dates back to her role as a streetcar conductor during World War II, highlighting her diverse experiences and impact on the city.
