Bas will leave council seat early to save Oakland money on special elections

"I'm committed to a transparent, responsible, and orderly transition of leadership," Bas said.

By resigning in December, Bas will make it possible for the city council to schedule a consolidated special election on April 15, 2025.

This will make final the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao; the elevation of Bas to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors; and the election of three new members of the City Council.

At the Dec. 17 meeting, council will officially declare the mayor's office vacant. At this point, Bas as Council President will serve as interim mayor.
