A fight over energy costs is raging in California
Briefly

California's rooftop solar panel owners recently triumphed over proposed changes to net energy metering (NEM) incentives, which regulators claimed were driving up energy costs for non-solar residents. Assemblymember Lisa Calderon's bill aimed to shorten the duration for these incentives from 20 to 10 years. However, following significant public opposition, the bill was amended to protect existing solar owners. Critics argue that the NEM program disproportionately burdens low-income individuals, while supporters emphasize the need to maintain promised benefits for solar panel users.
This inequity hits low-income customers, renters and customers in hot inland climates the hardest. NEM truly is reverse Robin Hood.
If we tell someone, 'Hey, this is going to be a deal for 20 years,' we can't realize belatedly, 'Oh my gosh, that was a little too generous.'
