Westmont boys basketball has achieved an incredible milestone by reaching the CCS championship game for the first time in nearly three decades, representing a significant progression for the program. The game saw Westmont, who moved up to a tougher division this season, build a strong lead against San Mateo, who nearly made a comeback. Ultimately, the Warriors held on for a 48-47 victory, thanks in part to crucial free throws by Gabe Mathiesen late in the game. Coach John Franza expressed pride in his team's journey and close-knit group of senior players.
“We controlled the game pretty well, except for that third quarter. Really happy for our kids. We have 10 seniors, and most of them have played together since sixth grade. This is a special group.”
“The Warriors (20-7) took control of the game after San Mateo (20-6) started out on an 8-2 run. From there, Westmont steadily extended its edge until it reached double digits.”
“Yet Westmont never lost the lead. And with 10.2 seconds remaining and a 46-44 lead, junior center Gabe Mathiesen sank two free throws to clinch the Warriors' spot in the D-II championship.”
“I thought we could have succeeded in the B league last year; we worked hard, and our performance has proven that this year’s transition was successful.”
