Matthew Joseph Shelton, a former teacher at Benicia Unified, is facing 12 felony counts for lewd acts against four minors under 14. Following a preliminary hearing, where Judge Bryan J. Kim confirmed sufficient evidence for trial, Shelton's jury trial is scheduled for October 8. He's previously been acquitted of sexual misconduct charges during his time at Napa Valley Unified, but the new allegations date back to 2022. Public documents related to his alleged past abuse in 2007 will be released, although some minor identity protections remain in place.
In the BUSD case, Shelton, in an amended complaint filed Aug. 12, 2024, is charged with five counts of a lewd act on one child, two counts on another, one on another, and four on a fourth child while he taught classes at Robert Semple Elementary School.
