Teen girl killed, brother critically injured in Westchester County house fire
An overnight electrical fire broke out around 2 a.m. at a home on Sherwood Road in Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County. The fire started when a power strip connected to an extension cord in the dining room failed. Rescue efforts involved neighbors bringing a ladder and firefighters responding to blocked entryways. Both doors were blocked by fire, but people were rescued through windows. A 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were pulled out in critical condition with extensive burn injuries. The 17-year-old girl died, and the family’s pet dog also died. The mother was injured but expected to survive, and another adult and a firefighter were injured as well.
"The fire began when a power strip connected to an extension cord in the dining room failed, according to Mohegan Lake Fire Chief Thomas Eade."
