Children's Fairyland, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2023, was conceived in 1948 when Arthur Navlet and William Penn Mott aimed to create a whimsical amusement park for young children near Lake Merritt. Despite initial design conflicts, they established a child-friendly aesthetic emphasizing whimsy over realism. Mott's dedication to understanding children's literature influenced the park's design and themes. A unique safety policy was also established, ensuring children only entered with adults, further enhancing the park's commitment to child safety and community engagement.
Mott was amused by the suspicion, but the issue of children's safety was no laughing matter. So he and Navlet devised a simple policy to keep the bad guys out.
Thus was born the motto that has ruled Children's Fairyland ever since: No straight lines and a surprise around every corner.
